On a typical Sunday, one of my cousins informed me that she had tickets to the Red Cross Youth in Concert and asked if I would like to attend. I would only have a half hour to get ready though because the venue, Southern Academy of the Performing Arts (SAPA) is very far from home. It was really late notice but I didn't mind going to support the little kids who were showing off their talents to raise funds. A long Car ride later and we finally reach our destiny, a few minutes late but there.
What I liked:
1) We have so many amazing talented kids in Trinidad and Tobago. As a citizen I am extremely proud.
2) The talents varied from dancers, singers, and musicians to monologues and speech bands among others.
3) Some of these little kids came out to represent and they did so well.
4) All the talents...some of them blew me away. The drummers and Tassa players made me want to get up and dance. The pan players were all entertaining. Sometimes I cant stand pan but I have to admit that I am proud that its an instrument that I can be proud to say is Trinbagonian.
4) The singers were all so good especially a little boy who sang Children are our Future by Whitney Huston hit all those high notes perfectly.
5) They even had refreshments on sale to help sponsor their camp.
6) Trinidad and Tobago were both represented by different schools and lots of kids were involved.
What I thought should have been better:
1) I didn't like that they the speech band said a thing that leaned to one political party over another. I wasn't sure if that was appropriate for a little kids show. Whichever adult who wrote that into their performance should know better than to let their own political thoughts into that. Keep the kids away from political opinions and politics on the whole.
2) SAPA seats in that theater were not very comfortable but maybe that is a ploy to keep people awake during slow performances???
Generally I think it was a great eye opening experience to the amazing kids that we have in Trinidad and Tobago. Often you here and see about all the bad things that happen here, its the easiest thing to point out. Teens fighting and promoting violence and sometimes it can feel like our society is going down the drain but when you see kids doing such positive things it gives you faith. We need to show support to the young ones in our society who are trying to make a difference. Support them and be proud. Lets allow the good moments with our kids to out weigh the bad. Ciao for now.
