Hello, and good morrow to you. How are you all on this wonderful rainy day today? Fine I hope. Today I would like to talk about Sherlock Holmes or at least the varying types of shows and movies about it.
Sherlock Holmes has always been one of my favorite books of all time. It has a wonderful mix of suspense and mystery. With a wonderfully dreadfully sarcastic no nonsense detective and his long time companion. The original book written by Sir Author Conan Doyle is an instant classic. The dynamic between his imperfect detective and lovable companion is one for the history books.
Many people have tried to capture the essence of the stories and of that partnership in movies and shows. I have only seen a few come close.
Let me start with BBC's miniseries Sherlock. A modern day version of the story, originally set in the 1880's and onward. In this version the story of Sherlock is catapulted to the 21 century, with modern day gadgets, twists and so forth. This version took a big chance here, BUT it works. It works because of well written scripts and nothing short of EXCELLENT acting. Benedict Cumberbatch's Version of Sherlock is one of the best if not the best Sherlock impression I have ever seen. Martin Freeman's Watson fits so nicely with Ben's Sherlock that it should be a sin for two actors to be that good together. Its just beautiful. If you have not seen it yet. Do, you wont regret it. I think one of the other reasons why this version works so well is because the creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are big fans of the book series themselves. Oh I forgot to mention their spin on the Villainous Moriarty amazing and amazingly played by Andrew Scott. Even if I dont always like where the storyline is going the first class acting gets me everytime.
Second runner up and not by much is the Sherlock Holmes movies staring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock and Watson respectively. Both do a great job and the chemistry is great here as well, but in the end it came down to storyline (Which was also great here)and acting. This works as a great period piece because it has the essence of the original timeline (a bit), and I must admit i LOVED both movie and show, but BBC's version capured the orginal characters the best.
Words of advice for today: Sometimes its okay to compare movie and book version of something. It just might make you appreciate (or not) the hard work some screen writers go through to get a good story right.
Ciao for now, peace and auf wierdersehen!
